Vacation Week Recap + Upcoming Events

Last week was not only beautiful weather here but it was full of activity with April Vacation Week programs for kids. We seeded, composted, cooked, weeded, hung out with our new chickens....and all in all had a lot of fun! 

What's on the Horizon? Learn how to make all natural ointment for bug bites, bug spray and deodorant on Thursday (April 28th) with Nicole Lewis at Make & Take: Bugs, Bites & Bodycare - That's The Pits. Our Mothers Day Brunch (May 8th) is sold out but there's always Springfest on Memorial Day (May 30th)! Here is the current lineup:

• Run in the Powisset Farm Trail Race (pre Springfest)
• Meet our animals including our new cattle, pigs, chickens, and visiting goats
• 125 second cake eating contest to celebrate the Trustees' 125th birthday
• Ride the "bike blender" and drink a smoothie, donated for the day by Bikes Not Bombs! 
• Aeronaut Brewing Co. & Fit Vine Wine
• Food! Including Bushel + Crumb, Copper Kettle Bakery, Heritage Truck Catering Company, Stop Rover BBQ, and many more
• Tunes by the South County Rounders
• As well as a whole lineup of awesome vendors, community members, and lots of kids crafts!

If anyone is interested in volunteering at Springfest, we have lots of volunteer opportunities from assisting at the bike blender station, directing cars, helping with kids crafts and much more! Please contact Nicole at nnacamuli@thetrustees.org.

News from the fields:

Pop Up Market And Plant Sale:

Saturday April 30th, 10 - 4

We are partnering with our friends at Neighborhood Farm this Saturday to host a market and  plant sale. The good folks from Neighborhood Farm will have a variety of vegetable and herbs transplants for sale. We will be selling storage carrots, radishes, and parsnips from the root cellar. We will also have all of our pork products available including bacon, pork chops, and hams.

Volunteer on the farm:

Do you enjoy potatoes and onions? Help us plant our potato and onion crops this week. We have volunteer drop in hours Friday from 9 to 12 and Saturday 9 to 12. We have a big push this  week to get these crops in the ground while the weather is good.

Upcoming Events!

It looks like Spring has sprung and hopefully you and your kiddos have some fun plans for next week, April Vacation Week. If not, we still have space in our programs and will offer a little something for everyone. Here is a summary of our lineup:

Tuesday, Apr. 19th: Kids in the Kitchen, 11-1pm

Wednesday, Apr. 20th: Fun in the Fields, 9-11:30am

Thursday, Apr. 21st: Pizza & Board Games, 11-1pm

Friday, Apr. 22nd: Composting, 9-11:30am

We will also have some furry, cute visitors spending the week in the Powisset classroom! Come for a visit and find out who, what, ....!

You should also note that we have a Story Walk posted starting near our Kids Area outside. It is self-directed and lots of fun. Go check it out!

Lastly, looking forward to the end of the month for those DIY'ers, Nicole Lewis will be teaching Make & Take: Bugs, Bites and Bodycare - That's The Pits on April 28th where we will be making our own bug spray, bite remedy and deodorant. It is sure to be a fun class, like the skin care ones.

Farm

What's growing: This was the winter that never really materialized. Well until the beginning of April. This week we have been quite busy in the greenhouse. We have maxed out our growing space in the greenhouse and have had to think outside of the box in order to keep up with our seeding. It has been far too cold to put any plants outside to harden off or transplant into the fields. As soon as we get some warm, dry weather we will be busy working through our first field prep direct seeding and transplanting of the season.



Volunteer Opportunities:
Volunteer drop in hours start this Saturday from 9 -1. Meet Andrew at the information kiosk at the foot of the barn. Please arrive by 9am so that you can receive instructions on what the volunteer job will be that day.







Pop-up Farm Stand:
The pop-up farm stand has moved from the root cellar back into the barn. You will find our root vegetables in the glass refrigerator. We still have lots of pork available as well. We have bacon, bacon ends, shoulder chops loin chops, hams, ham steak, trotters, and fat back located in the chest freezer labeled meats.

Events!

Thank you all who came out to our Open House on Saturday! It was nice to see some new faces and old as well. We ate yummy pie from Bushel & Crumb and watched Kathy Zola with her loom. 

The following day, we had Inna Khutrik, from Innas Kitchen in Newton and the Boston Public Market join us at Powisset for a Passover cooking class. We made matzo ball soup (of course), honey glazed roasted chicken, sauteed asparagus and potato kugel. It was a perfect meal for a snowy day!

Next week bring more classes....on Thursday, April 14th, we continue with Nicole Lewis' DIY classes. In this one, Health & Wellness from the Kitchen: DIY Sring Cleaning, she will show us how to make cleaning products right in our own kitchen! We will be making an all purpose cleaner, laundry soap and more. You can register here.

Did you realize that April School Vacation is right around the corner? For those who are looking for things to do with your kids during the week, join us at Powisset! We are holding classes/events from Tuesday through Friday, and each day is different. Here is an outline of what is going on, when. 

Tuesday, Apr. 19th: Kids in the Kitchen, 11-1pm: Kids will make dinner for mom and dad! This is a drop off program for kids aged 7+ (or younger, if accompanied by an adult). All parents are welcome to join us at 12:30pm for our meal.

Wednesday, Apr. 20th: Fun in the Fields, 9-11:30am: Today we will be working with the farm crew in the greenhouse, in the fields....where ever they need our help while they get ready for CSA season!

Thursday, Apr. 21st: Pizza & Board Games, 11-1pm: We will convene in the kitchen to make pizza together and while we are waiting for it to cook, we will engage in non-competitive fun with our Powisset friends. We will have board games available but feel free to bring your own. Kids and Adults are welcome.

Friday, Apr. 22nd: Composting, 9-11:30am: Janice McPhilips from Holly Hill Farm in Cohasset will be leading us in a composting workshop. We will head out to our compost pile, learn what composting is, its benefits, how to do it, and also learn by doing. Please bring/wear boots and gloves.

Lastly, the Walpole and Westwood Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Programs are setting up a Story Walk here at the farm, just outside of the barn, near the kids area. The self-directed Story Walk, "It's Spring" by Linda Glaser, will be available from Apr. 11-23rd.
