I am typing this winter blog post with cold, cracked hands, dirty from two days of sorting, bagging and weighing vegetables from our first ever January winter CSA pick-up! The dust from the summers' soil is falling from my pants and sweatshirt in small clouds, my nose still running from the in and out of the greenhouse today-cold storage veggies onto warm distribution prep tables.
Only five days ago I was basking in the glorious heat of a west coast vacation and when I blinked, I found myself back at the farm surrounded by a fabulous group of current and former crew members, working together to host our first ever January CSA pick up.
It has been interesting and fun assembling our longest winter CSA program in our farm's history. The November and December pick-ups were booming with root vegetables, squash, onions and leeks, huge bunches of greens, herbs and more! The January pick-up will feature more roots, onions, shallots, hot peppers, popcorn, sweet potatoes, storage and salad radishes and a small amount of salad greens. I have already learned a great amount about what works and doesn't work about proper longer-term storage of vegetables and can't wait to move into next season with those lessons in hand. Our vision for next season is to continue this trend of doing a longer winter share, with the hopes of even offering a year-round CSA in the not-too-distant future. With the construction of a new cold storage area on the farm, we may be able to reach that goal!
Tomorrow's CSA will be held in our greenhouse so that we can keep both vegetables and people from freezing! Our farm stand will not be open, but we will have pork for sale in the greenhouse. So, even if you are not participating in the winter CSA, you can come purchase some Powisset pork, or just stop in for a wintertime visit to the farm!
This season's summer CSA shares will be going on sale on March 1rst for returning members and April 1rst for new members. Check your mail for registration and 2013 news from Powisset Farm!
We are excited to kick off our 2013 vegetable distributions tomorrow from our cozy greenhouse! We look forward to seeing you there or in the Spring!
Happy winter from your farmers at Powisset,
Meryl and the Powisset Farm Crew
